Unit 2 and 3 Documentary Assignment 2 Research Diary

My documentary idea

1.taking a short video of the festival in Manchester and the stalls
2. Talk about their history.
3.Ask question and interview them about the festival
4. Going to talk about how this can engage with the customer
5..(finish)

Why is the Manchester festival a good thing? It is a good thing because it is one of the richness and variety of the world's most colourful, moving, joyful, and spectacular celebrations. Thousands of festivals, great and small, take place around the world every year.It will help people who want to plan their trip to coincide with a festival

Here are some quotes by random people about cultural festivals on website.

"Went to the MIF(Manchester International Festival)  sight and many of the best shows mentioned in the article already sold out in spite of the fact that tickets supposedly go on sale tomorrow....at 10.00 which is just right for those who work (not). Why dont these shows adopt the football practice of balloting after a certain deadline which is much fairer and democratic. In the MIF case, I do hope there is a bias in favour of greater Manchester residents but somehow I doubt it " (http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2013/feb/28/manchester-international-festival-shelley-macbeth)

"The food was great i love the manchester cultural festival because there are many things to do like try different food and drink do christmas shopping." (http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2013/feb/28/manchester-international-festival-shelley-macbeth)

"A beautiful collection of European traditions and family fun. Songs, recipes, crafts - all delicious" (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=fEgAAAAACAAJ&dq=festivals&hl=en&sa=X&ei=is6NUoGhOaSa7QbWx4GoAg&redir_esc=y)

BOOKS AND MAGAZINE/NEWSPAPER
Books

Family and food festivals
  • "They do festival for special thing like Birthday, Christmas,  New Year, Eid, Diwali etc".
  • "They also do festival to try different region of food from different country".
  • Family and food festivals "a beautiful collection of European traditions and family fun. Songs, recipes, crafts - all delicious".
What they mean by "a beautiful collection of European traditions and family fun. Songs, recipes, crafts - all delicious" is that there are different variety of food of culture that people want to eat also it says songs, recipes, craft that means that there are other culture stuff to do like dance to some different culture songs, try different food  and make some traditional art pieces for you to remember.

Multicultural Festivals in the UK

  •  "nearly 48,000 people in the UK have got different language".
  • "Multi culture will eventually become problem free in the UK"
what they mean by Multi culture will eventually be a problem in the UK is that there are many people in the UK but sometime there are problem in the UK like racism, judging the culture, taking the mick out of their food and music etc. so that is the problem but there are also many people in the UK that like to learn about the different culture, the music, food, style, cloths etc. so there are some people that have problem about culture  and there are some people that want to learn about different culture.

Analyse of a similar  Documentary

The similar documentary I have chosen for the Christmas celebration/festivals is called Origins of the Christmas documentary and what this documentary is. This documentary tell us about the first Christmas, the festivals, present etc. My documentary will have all that suggestion but more I will have in my documentary the history of Christmas festivals, food, music, exciting Christmas festival and many more suggestion so I will take some idea fro this documentary but my documentary will be good when i added some info and more video.

How it will it targets the audience

After my research I have released that my age group for my documentary is 18 and over because i have released that teenage people do not watch any documentary only if the documentary is about  sports, game, cartoon etc, but my documentary is about cultural festival and that means that over 18 will watch this. Also my documentary  will be better than any other documentary because my documentary will show you how exciting it is to enjoy a cultural  festival, The second thing good about my documentary is that i will be showing you the spirit of the Christmas market and with my research i also found out that 90% of people all aged said yes for the Christmas market this show that the kids and the adult love to do Christmas market.
It will target the audience because I will show the audience what you can do in a festival.

Primary research

during in my documentary I will ask question to random people relating my documentary in Manchester.
Here is an example of a primary research I will do in my documentary Questionnaire: I will give the people a questionnaire to fill out so I can see what they like about the manchester festival  and what they hate about the cultural festival and if they would come back again, I could also do a online questionnaire that the people can do on computer and laptop.

Here is a another example of a primary research that I will use in my documentary Interview: I will go around the Greater Manchester and interview random people what they think about the cultural festival in Manchester, what so good about the manchester festival, What is your best  thing about manchester festival etc.

Is it reliable

If you watch a documentary about the same subject that you are doing like 5 years ago than it is not reliable because that means they have done everything in the old documentary that you can not do in the new documentary like if you are doing about festival they have already talking about whats good and whats bad about it but if you are doing it 5 years now then it will be the same thing so it will not be reliable and it is not up to date.

Also if you are reading a book or the magazine or a newspaper then that is also bad as the book, magazine or the newspaper might be un-reliable because they might be a bit old and have old information about the documentary you are making so i would say that this is unreliable and it is not up to date.

Internet can be both reliable and un-reliable. They can be un reliable because they can have put the information you want for your documentary years ago so that can be unreliable and that is not up t date but it can be reliable because they can upload the information this year so that what makes it up to date

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this report I am going to give you the information of research's Primary and Secondary are research methods also I will be talking about Qualitative and Quantitive and they are research data.

First I will be talking about  the research methods of Primary research also the advantage and disadvantage of primary research. Primary research (also called as field research) is about collecting your own information involves collecting data first hand. The main one are; being interviewed, questionnaire, panels and observation, focus group, survey and internet forums.
The advantage for primary research is that you can get your own information about whatever you want and not to rely on other people works. Also it provides data thats is up to date.

The disadvantage for primary research is that it is expensive to collect and it need to be a large sample size to be accurate, there could be a lot of confusion on a big scale within the question on how you portray them and how the public interprets them.

How can this become so handy: It can become handy because if you want to do a  documentary about someone you have to ask question or private questions that they want to get out to the public for example the documentary "The Impostor." The camera was in their face and they want to tell the public about their son/brother.

What is a research method and what does it do? Research and experimental development comprise creative work undertaken on systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new application.

  • Secondary Research.
Secondary Research is a research method and is a previous researchers undertaken by other that they can use to inform their own researchers. Here are the example secondary research do; Quotes, Documentary, Internet, Books, Magazine/Newspaper, Photo library and online articles.
There are many Advantages to using secondary research and they are Low cost acuire, Clarification of research question, May answer research question and it does not evolve too much effort.

The Disadvantage of secondary research is that the information could be outdated so the info that you might retrieved might be outdated so that will be no use and the other disadvantage for secondary research is that it doesn't pertain exactly what you are doing so there is no point in that.

How can this become so handy: This can become so handy because when you are doing a documentary and you need information you can look at a lot of places to get the information you need for your documentary like the internet, books magazine/ newspaper etc. Also this can be handy because if you want the information for your documentary all the information you have just checked might be out of date or nothing to what you are doing.

Now I will be talking about the (research data) Qualitative and Qualitative

What is a research data and what does it do? A research data is when which is collected, observed, or created in a digital form, for purpose of analyzing to produce original research result.

What is the meaning of Qualitative and Quantitative? Well Qualitative means opinions from people example here is an example what Qualitative means; A film review or a discussion.
Quantitative means a number or a data I will give you an example of a Quantitative audience breakdown by group and how many men and women.

The advantage of Qualitative data is that the result can guide a project to a success feedback and that they can inform future researchers. The disadvantage for Qualitative is that it can be tricky and very hard to get the result they want, Finding are a result of a lot of variables for example; Who, Where and When and finally it has the impression of being less valid.

The advantage of Quantitive is that it is easy to analyse (to get the information), clear result from the graph chart and it can be fast fast and can be in your favour.

The dis-advantage of Quantitative is that the result are with out detail.

Production Research.

Audience Research- Audience measurement measure how many people are in the audience usually in relation to radio listener- ship and television viewers  but also in relation to radio newspaper and magazine readership and increasingly, web traffic on website . Also audience research ensures that the people reached are the ones a certain product is aimed at and so a product is aimed at the right audience. For example, there is no point marketing luxury goods in a area of very low income. Audience research can provide necessary changes to a product to ensure it is tailored to the target audience- for example if a film is fitting for a PG, 12, 15 or 18 audience. It ensures that money is not being wasted by media industries by marketing to the wrong audience and that marketing is used  effectively.

Market Research- Market research is the action or activity of gathering information about consumers need and preference. Market research is the process of collecting valuable information to help you find out if there is a market for your proposed product or service. The information gathered from market research helps budding entrepreneurs make wise and profitable business decisions.
The key to any successful business is to understand what it is that your customers want and giving this to them in a way that is profitable for you. Also Many entrepreneurs make the mistake early on of thinking that they know what their customers want without ever asking them. This can result in some very expensive mistakes later on. This module will give you a basic understanding of the concept of market research, its various uses and provide guidance on how you can design your own market research questionnaire for your mini-work/ business.

Production Research- Production Research is a research into the production here are some example of production research; Coots, Location and Cast. Production research basically involves finding information that can be used to explore the many if not all the facets of a play: its context in our world, author, and the world of the play, critical analysis and interpretation, production history, images and sounds, sources. It is also means the collection and analysis of information of the content.

Audience Research Unit 6

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_bbB5DUQigrTGlaSURsdXlQc1k/edit?usp=sharing

Unit 1 Assignment 1 Pre Production

Time-

  • What is a shooting schedule?  A Shooting schedule is a project plan of each day shooting for a film production. It is created by the assistant manager who then reports it to the production manager managing the production schedule. Both schedule represent a timeline starting where and when props are used.
  • Why is it important to have a shooting schedule? It is important to have  a shooting schedule because the cast and the assistant manager gets to know when the right scene is to put all the props also which location the scene they have to be like they have to be in the building for 10 min then they have to go outside so that is why it is important to have a shooting schedule.
  • How long does it take to get clearance for music/clips?  It depends on your . However, after sending the publisher, all the correct required information  will likely to be  receive a response from them within 10 days. If they do not, you should follow up with the publisher to make sure they received the information, but you should not contact them before the 10 day period is over.

Personnel-

  • My choice of documentary is called (Super Size Me ). The main man in this documentary is Morgon Spurlock and the film he has made in his career are; Super size me; Where in the world is Osama Bin laden, the greatest movie ever sold and Mansome.
  • The sound department of the film Size me up are 1.Martin Czembor is a sound engineer and his sound is known for these film;  Notes on Scandal, The Good Shepherd, Super size me and Two week notice. the second of the sound department is  2.Hans ten Broeke is a Sound designer and these are the film that he is done the sound; Supersize me, Swoon, Twitch and Under surveillance. Now the last one of the sound department is 3.David Alvarez Zerpa is a sound recordist intern (uncredited) and these are the film that he has done; Bowling for columbine, Super size me, Azul no tan rosa and Rock, Paper Scissors.
  • Camera and Electrical Department- A camera operator is a professional operator of a film or a video camera. Tracy Boulian, Avi Gerver and Julie Soefer they are all camera operator of the same film Super Size Me.
  • Art department - Art department is an major feature film can often number hundred of people. The art department proper with its Art director, Set designer and Draft mans; set decoration, Under the set decorator, Props and special effect. Ron English is a art department and he do all of the list above also he did all the art department for other movies like Exit through the gift shop, This land is yours and Super size me. The qualification you need to be a art department is English (C), Maths (C) IT (Distinction)
  • Animation Department - An animation department is where they do cartoon drawing of a 2D or a 3D person, object etc. Svilen Dimitro is a animation department and he did a lot of animation for films and documentary like Rew Day, The air race, Zift and supersize me. The qualification you need to be a animation department is IT (Distinction+) Media (A/Distinction+), Art (A*).

  • What qualification they have- Morgon Spurlock attended in Woodrow Wilson High school in West Virginia. He graduated with a BFA which stands for (Bachelor of Fine Art) and that is a Undergraduate degree for students in the US  and Canada.

  • Why is it important to get the right cast? It is important to have the right crew because they are professional cast that make a lot of films so they know what to do on their scene/part. Here is an example of a perfect cast: Toby Maguire is excellent in the film spider mans but after spider man 3 they have added a new guy (Andrew Garfield) who have made the reborn of spider man and that film is called The Amazing spider man where they have got new cast for the film. but the people love  Toby Maguire as he was good.
  • Also if you just get a random stranger out of nowhere you can not call him a professional cast or the right cast because they have no idea what they are doing and it will waste time for the release date for the movie because you have to find the right guy to be in part of the movie they are suited so it is important to have the right cast for the right movie.

Finance-

  • Where did you get the money from to make a documentary/ How did the documentary you watch get the funded? Spurlock has made a film all about the advertising industry’s encroachment into the movie world.
And just to prove his point, he managed to get 15 companies to fund the project, all through product placement and name recognition, including the title – POM Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Their budget was $1065,000. He has gt his company help to get the money for this documentary so he can make this documentary for the people who eat fast food everyday 24/7 so he got the money from his companies. It is also important where you get the money from like you can hire a private Investor so they can control the amount of money so you dont spend to much, you could also get a loan from the bank to make the movie/documentary then once the movie/documentary is a hit you can give the money back and keep half of the money.

  • How much is it to clear clip or music from other TV/ Film company? Publishing License- from the people who own the copyright to the piece of music for example lyrics and composition. You should note that for this kind of copyright, copyright exists only when the music or words have been recorded or written down. Recording License- The people who have preformed the version of the music that you want to use for example Sound recording copyright exist in pianist of one of the song. You will need to see who own the right of the music this may depend on if the music is published or not, you will also need the clearance from the right holder of the music you want

Locations-
  • Location- Spurlock have been filming in all of  New York to get this documentary right about MC Donald being bad for you. Before you can shoot at some locations, you will need to obtain film permits from either through the city or the state. To obtain a permit, you will need to provide an insurance,so they might be additional fees if you want to use public property like the street, the doctors room, asking people question and filming in the street and MC Donald. You should also obtain location agreements from the owners of the specific property where you plan to shoot like MC Donald, the doctors room, gym etc. There are two parts that make up the location agreement. First you must have a rental agreement for using the property. Second you must have a written consent to photograph the property and use these photographs in the film. There is a common misconception that you need permits to film in New Yoek, this is generally not the case. There are times where permits are essential, especially if you have a large crew and are causing a hazard but if it’s just you and an assistant  producer/ whatever and you are on a public highway, film away There are places you CAN NOT film. These are generally privately owned land.

  • Why did they have permission? They have got permission because Morgan Spurlock wants to prove that MC Donald is not good for you and he proved it by eating 30 days of MC Donald food for breakfast, dinner and tea and showing the after effect by eating MC Donald for 30 days. He also proved that nearly the entire of America eats fast food and die on fat. Here are the website and the contacts that they had permission to film there; here is the website for new york MC Donald http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/home.html

Facilities:

  •  Super size me have used a lot of things like the normal standard camera, microphone and mini mic, the lighting, transport.

  • What equipment  is best for making your documentary? The best camera/ video camera to make the documentary is the SONY dsr- 500 which is the best for making video and documentary and the price of that in the UK is £779.99 and in the US the cost of the camera is $1200. For the sound you can just get a mini microphone or just a normal microphone which is quite cheap in the UK and the US and for the editing equipment you can just go on a I MAC and use final cut pro which is good for editing and putting stuff in.

  • What are the cost of thing hiring like that? the cost of hiring a spy cam is about $120.00 to $150.00, the cost of hiring special men who know what they are doing is $2000 a week so you have to chose your day right.

  • Why is it important to have the right kit? It is important to have the right kit because they are filming a documentary so they need all the highly technology like (spy cams) for secreate recording, (mini microphone speaker) so they all can listen like this film is yet not rated they have used all the high technology. They also need highly technology so when they have all the footage they van have the software to edit scene, add stuff in and add music etc.

Materials/ Copyrights:

  • What is a clearance/copyright?
What is Copyright: Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator of intellectual wealth (e.g. the photographer of a photograph or the author of a book) to get compensated for their work and be able to financially support themselves.

What is clearance: Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator of intellectual wealth (e.g. the photographer of a photograph or the author of a book) to get compensated for their work and be able to financially support themselves

What is PRS- PRS stands for preforming right society. PRC for music is the world best music writer so they composer and they do publishers. PRS for music is one of the world most efficient combined rights collecting operations. offering its members more money, more often at less cost and its customer can use the music.

Unit 26 Assignment 3 Harry Potter Fandom

Harry Potter Fandom

File:Slytherin-Cosplay.jpg
What are Fandoms?
The meaning of Fandom is where people around the world are obsessed with a film and they have to get the stuff.
Harry Potter is an example because people buy all the merchandise and dress up as them like the image on the left.
these people are fan of Harry Potter so they are dressed as Hogwarts students. Fans are important to film producer because because

Fandom trailers of Harry Potter:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2irCw6isxA

The very first Harry potter is quite good as the writing of Harry Potter and the philosopher stone is in gold so it can be stand out and as you can see the name of the main person of the movie 'Harry Potter' is in like a old style of writing so that tells me that this movie is based in the 1999.
You can also see that they have put the most important stuff in this poster like the main cast of this movie, the train, the location where they will be in for a long time the castle. The colour of the background is a different shade of blue this tell me that the film is spooky and mysterious and you can see the they have white smoke every where in the poster that tells me that also tells me it is mysterious because it look like you don't know what is going to happen.
If you look at Harry Potter facial expression it look like he is shocked that he might see a bad guy also he is looking somewhere else instead of looking straight in the middle so that also tells me or the fan that he might see something bad.

This fan made trailer of Harry potter and the philosopher's stone is quite good. If you can hear the music in the background you can tell it is quite calm and fast at the start so that makes the film all gentle for all the kids but in the middle and the end of the trailer the music is spooky and slow so that tells me and the fans that this film have some scary scene.
At the start of the trailer you can see that the camera was close up on the letter that Harry have got so it means that you the fan can read as well what Harry is reading. The best dialogue in the film was "When its  brother gave you that scare" that is a good line because if you are watching this film for the first time that dialogue will make you think who is Harry potter brother and how did he gave him that scar.

There is some  good shot in the trailer like Over the Shoulder shot, Mid Shot, close up but I as a fan of Harry Potter thinks that the best camera shot is the Bird eye view. The scene where Harry is on a magical broom for the first time  flying up and down you can see that they have used  bird eye view to show the effect on flying. They have also added special effect in different trailer like the wand effect, explosion etc.

Harry Potter fan made website
http://www.harrypotterwizardscollection.com/

Fan go on the fan made website so they can know all the latest news of Harry Potter like when the new movie coming out, what happening to the cast, new game/products etc. over 1.5 billion people around the world go on this website to see what is the latest news, movie, game, picture etc.

Harry Potter Fandom- Pottermania
File:Harry Potter lines.jpg

Potter mania is Harry Potter fans and as you can see in this image there are lots of people who are waiting for their copy of   Harry Potter and the half blood prince  this image shows how much people love Harry Potter. as it also say on Wikipedia Potter mania held midnight parties to celebrate the release of the final four books at bookstores.

Conventions
File:Sectus-midnight-wait.jpg

This Image shows Attendees of sectus convention held in London waiting for the mid night release of Harry Potter and the deathly hallows. This shows that fans love Harry potter if they are waiting 10 hours for a midnight release.

True Pottermania fan-and merchandise

This fan is a huge Harry Potter fan as she has got all the merchandise of Harry otter: Poster, Books, Costume, Toys diary etc.

Kids and teen will buy Harry Potter merchandise because they want to be them like dress up as them, play the game, read the books, poster in your bedroom etc.because that is the kid role model and that is what they want to be.

Fans goes to see Harry Potter because it is a family film, a adventure film and a fantasy film where the fan will have fun watching it. The MPAA have rated this film a PG which stands for Parietal Guardian and that means if you are a huge Harry Potter fan and you are small you have to take your parents with you as this film contains scary moments and mild language. these fan engaged harry potter and when they watch a harry potter film they want to be like him copy his cloths, his action, the word.
